Janet Brown is the Assistant Project Director for Family/Community Engagement and Early Childhood Education at the Institute for Educational Leadership, IEL.  She manages plans, and develops partnership that are leveraging quality family programs and enhancing early learning outcomes.  Janet currently works with Mind in the Making - Community Schools, District Leaders Network on Family & Community Engagement, Family Engagement and Teacher Quality and other efforts underway at IEL.

Prior to joining IEL, Janet was a Senior Research Associate at the George Washington University Center for Equity and Excellence in Education, GW-CEEE where she developed an Early Learning Systems Building Network among early childhood leaders from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Washington DC.   As the Center's Regional Family and Community Engagement Coordinator, she supported communication and outreach efforts such as the District of Columbia, Office of the State Superintendent's series of Parent Guides to Health and Physical Education Standards. Janet also supported principal leadership development  as part of the School Improvement Grant efforts of US Department of Education and is co author of Changing the Conversation with Families in Persistently Low-Achieving High Schools: Guidance for Implementation of School Improvement Grants. While at GW-CEEE, Janet was a member of a staff team that coordinated the Center's district level equity work and assisted in the development of the Equity Planning Tool.

Janet began her work in education as an instructor and family literacy/program coordinator at PLAN, Inc where she developed parent-child reading and community outreach efforts.  Since that time, she has provided training and technical assistance through programmatic efforts of Head Start (Training Guides and Family Literacy Promising Practices); the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Community Intervention for Diabetes Self-Management); the National Education Association (Affiliate Capacity, Urban Initiatives), and the PBS Parents Website (Literacy Oversight).  Janet holds a BS in Sociology, with a concentration in research and a MA in English Linguistics, with an emphasis on the teaching of reading to diverse students.  Janet Brown is a certified ESL teacher and has taught at the middle school and community college levels.
